Plaid, bold colors among fall fashion trends
BARBOURSVILLE -- Mad for plaid or stoked for the '80s -- both trends will heat up the hallways in schools throughout the country this fall.
With some students already back in the classroom and other just days away, the cash registers at the Huntington Mall are doing some jangling as everyone from the tiny to the tweens and teens look for the hottest fashions to take them back to school.
"It's plaid, bold, bright colors and, amazingly enough, the '80s are back again. The vintage vest works well with button-down shirts for guys and waist-high jeans on the girls," said Margi MacDuff, marketing manager at the Huntington Mall.
Inspired by the television show "Gossip Girl," plaid fashions, including hats, minis and shoes, are a hot offering.
Bold pairings in leggings, long tops and dresses are also a favorite of this fall's fashion-forward.
"The hot 2008 colors are the jewel tones and loud colors paired with dark-colored basics, such as fuchsia tops with black pants, rich greens with navy and turquoise with chocolate brown," MacDuff said. "Go solid or choose graphic design patterns that incorporate these colors."
Below the waist, denim never goes out of style, with this year's varieties including both skinny leg and wider leg with high waist line. Guys can expect a more distressed look, and gals are looking to leggings as a hip alternative. Jeans are being paired with graphic tees and vintage vests to create their own unique look.
Shoe lovers will enjoy the fall's wide selection, with something for everyone. Girls will snatch up tall rain boots, Mary Jane flats and zip-top sneakers, with bowling-inspired shoes and skater-inspired kicks for the guys.
In addition to these essentials, accessorizing is a big deal -- big sunglasses, big earrings and big purses. Girls will also want to pick up a few scarves, head bands, bracelets and long necklaces. The slightly younger set will enjoy backpacks featuring "High School Musical," "Hannah Montana" and "Camp Rock."
"A lot of sales are already under way," MacDuff said. "Parents with younger kids tend to start shopping toward the end of July, while teenagers wait until the last minute looking for great bargains and getting together with their friends to find the items they want."
This fall, shopping will get a bit easier for some. Eleven stores throughout the mall will be accepting West Virginia clothing vouchers. Participating retailers include Steve and Barry's, Elder-Beerman, JCPenney, Sears, Buckle, Deb, Kids' Foot Locker, Foot Locker, Lady's Foot Locker, The Shoe Dept. and Old Navy.
"As a mother myself, purchasing clothes for back to school can be a lot of fun, but it can also be a lot of work. Trying to find the clothes that they will wear as well as trying to find the best deals can be stressful," MacDuff said. "Having even more options will allow parents, who depend on these vouchers to clothe their children for the new school year, more of an opportunity to find not only great deals but also the items that their children will enjoy and wear."
