The Planet expands reach to better serve listeners
HUNTINGTON -- The Planet can now be heard in more places than one on the FM dial.
Kindred Communications recently launched 98.5 on the air as a translator for 92.7 the Planet. The translator will help fill a void where 92.7 the Planet's signal did not reach strongly in Huntington and surrounding areas such as Proctorville and Chesapeake.
Listeners living in Lawrence, Boyd, Greenup, and eastern Cabell counties should still rely on the 92.7 frequency.
Reeves Kirtner, program director, said listeners that live within 98.5's listening area will now be able to enjoy features such as Lex and Terry and the Electric Lunch.
"People have always told us they love listening to the Planet, but once they get to work or inside their houses, they can't pick us up," Kirtner said. "This corrects that problem.
"I live off of Washington Boulevard in Huntington, but due to a legal co-interference with a competitor, I struggled sometimes to even listen to my own radio station in my house. The performance of 98.5 has exceeded our expectations."
Cameron Smith, director of engineering for Kindred Communications, said several options were looked at for improving the Planet's signal, but the 98.5 translator was the best option.
"Engineering studies were conducted, but due to Federal Communications Commission regulations, we were not able to increase power or move the transmitter closer to Huntington, which makes this the best option," he said.
Smith said the new 98.5 translator had been in the works since 2003, but the regulatory process was slowed by the FCC because of the more than 13,000 applications being filed across the country. However, the Planet was one of the first commercial translators granted by the FCC in the United States.
