Wednesday's Community News: Brenda Lucas
STEPS DOWN: The Rev. Paul R. Farley handed his reins as senior pastor of the Jefferson Avenue Church of God to the Rev. Greg Tomlinson, his son-in-law who has been the church's associate pastor 14 years. The 80-year-old Rev. Paul served the church for 38 years, but remains on the pastoral staff to support the new pastor, other ministries and needs. It appears that Rev. Paul can continue to keep these folks in line.
REMINDER: First Baptist Church of Ceredo is the site for Saturday's 27th annual Happy Hollow Reunion. Fellowship begins at 10:30 a.m. A covered-dish dinner follows at noon. Betty Hutchinson and others will provide singing. Door prizes are also available. Call Don W. Bias, president, 304-453-3192.

DANCING: It's time again for Dick Newman, music host, to call all continuous ballroom dancing folks to attend the monthly dance at the Junior League Ballroom, 617 9th Ave. The dance, offered from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, costs $7.50 per person. QUILTS: Mountain Memories Quilt Guild sponsors a quilt show Saturday, Aug. 30, as part of Mountain Heritage Day celebration. The show, dedicated to the late Dale "Goose" Robinson, is conducted at the Fort Gay Library. Quilts should be brought to the library from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, for the judging which follows. Call Mary J. Damron, 304-648-7265.
PARTNERS: Paw Taw Square Dance Club offers its monthly square dance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at YWCA, 633 5th Ave. Albert Allie does the calling and Charlene Salyers does the cuing.
SCHOOL DANCE: Vinson Middle School offers its back-to-school dance from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29. Admission is $3. Concessions are open.
WANNA BOWL? The Women's Bowling League at Ceredo Lanes is looking for bowlers for its 10 a.m. Thursday games. Call Kathy Workman, 304-453-2695.
OFFICERS: Taking charge for the United Daughters of the Confederacy include June Ashworth, district director, Ramona Capron, associate director and Linda Whaley, secretary/treasurer. The newly-elected officers serve two years.
NEW HIRE: Barbara H. Gunn, CPA, is the newly-hired financial analyst at Cabell Huntington Surgery Center. Most recently, Barbara was business manager for Gray Television Group Inc. and WSAZ Television. She has a degree in business from Marshall University and 20 years public accounting experience as a partner at Somerville & Company CPAs. Barbara also was a controller for HIMG for five years.
DIRECTOR: The interim executive director of Marshall University's Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning for 2008-09 has been named -- Dr. Sherri Smith, associate professor of English at MU, who began Aug. 18.
