Karen Hysell: Use curtains to make large window look like it's two
QUESTION: I've been shopping for new draperies for a large living room window. I'm finding that by the time I would purchase enough panels to cover my window, I would have a small fortune invested. Privacy is an issue, so we do close the curtains at night. I don't sew, but you probably know a less expensive way to do this. Please help. -- Barb, Huntington
ANSWER: How about covering the window first with blinds, shutters or shades of some kind. This would solve your privacy issue, your options are limitless and unless you have something custom made, these are quite affordable.
Purchase a pair of your favorite draperies and use them as "dummy" panels on either end of your window. These of course wouldn't close, but your privacy has already been addressed. To avoid having to go custom with your window treatment, purchase two ready-made sizes if possible and put a third drapery panel down the middle of your large window to hide the seam of the shades and it will appear you have two windows instead of one.
QUESTION: When you fill up a bookcase, should the books be grouped according to the color of the cover so all of the same colors will be together? -- Phillip, Huntington
ANSWER: If you want the books in your collection to be a focal point in the room, this is certainly the way to draw attention to them. Is it necessary to do this? No. Is it interesting to do this? Yes. I have a large collection of books and for me, it's easier to group them according to subject so I can find what I'm looking for more quickly. But, if you don't read these books that often, and really just want to show off the collection you have, putting the same colors together would be one way of doing it.
QUESTION: We have a screened-in porch that I have decorated in a style that I would call cottage or shabby chic. We have white wicker furniture, and I've covered the cushions with vintage looking fabric. There are also a couple of tables with glass tops and plants. I would like to add curtain panels to each corner and tie them back, and I want to add a crystal chandelier. My husband thinks these things won't take to the weather well. What is your opinion? -- Leigh, Proctorville
ANSWER: I think you're right on target with your design, and I love what you're trying to do. There are a couple of things I would think about though. For the curtains, I would use outdoor fabric so that fading and mildew won't be a problem. As for the chandelier, unless your porch is very protected from the weather, I would consider using an outdoor fixture.
