Author’s latest book seeks resolution for main characters
HUNTINGTON — Author Adam Dean needed resolution, but not the New Year’s kind.
His new book, “The Best Day Of My Life, So Far … and Other Stories,” is Dean’s third and was born out of a desire to give resolution to the fictional main characters, “Adam” and “Dawn.”
“This is what I do with this book. It is the end of their story; well, at least, the end of this particular story arc with them,” Dean explained. “If I write another book, ‘Adam’ and ‘Dawn’ are likely to be observers, commentators or even third-person narrators of the story.”
Dean said his books are inspired by experiences he’s had in his own life. He wrote it for himself, although he said he hopes other people will enjoy reading it.
“I did the text for the back cover of the book, and what I say is, ‘…So, what happens when two people live happily ever after?’ That’s what this third book is about,” explained Dean, whose second book ended with the main characters deciding to be boyfriend and girlfriend.
Dean, who lives with cerebral palsy that manifests itself in a speech impediment and lame right arm, works a “day job” as an attorney for the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals in the Chief Counsel’s office. The Kenova native’s first book, “Dawn, the Alpha Dog,” deals with male/female relationships and his second, “The Gate of Heavenly Peace,” about a trip to China.
“I think the books can be read independently from each other. For example, with ‘The Best Day of My Life,’ I think I focus on what it is like living with a disability more than I do with the first two books … not that everyone will agree with me about what I say about being disabled.”
Dean cites the first story, “Stuck in an Elevator,” in his new book as the funniest.
“Need I say more?” Dean offered.
He said he doesn’t have any immediate plans for new books and has plenty of people in his corner to keep him honest.
“As one person who really likes my books recently said, ‘I’m only a good writer. Not a great one,’” Dean said. “She’s probably right about that.”
