LANSING, W.Va. -- Class VI River Runners and Smokey's on the Gorge celebrate Mother's day on Sunday, May 11, with a benefit for The Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research.
"It's rare to find someone who has not been touched by breast cancer, including those of us at Class VI," said managing partner Jeff Proctor, whose wife Janet was diagnosed with the disease almost 10 years ago, in a prepared release. "Janet's illness and recovery touched all of us and brought us to a stronger understanding of the need for research to find the cure."
The Mother's Day raft trip special allows mothers to raft free with one paying guest. The raft trips on the Upper New River and Lower New River are gentle trips, suitable for children as young as 6 and first timers.
Off the river, Smokey's on the Gorge is serving a brunch and dinner menu from noon to 8 p.m. that includes Brie stuffed quail, herb encrusted pork loin, grilled beef tenders and roasted monkfish.
A portion of the proceeds from the buffet will go to the Komen for the Cure West Virginia affiliate and to the West Virginia Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program.
The real show-stealer is the dessert buffet. All proceeds from "Desserts for the Cure" go to breast cancer research programs. Janet Proctor, makes some desserts and coordinates donations for the dessert buffet.
