SCRAPPY: To celebrate May's National Scrapbook Month observation, Joyce Pacer offers two free sessions using rubber stamps to create beautiful scrapbook pages at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at 1 Jacqueline Heights. SENIORS: The old Childers Grocery on W.Va. 10 in Salt Rock gets a new look as it becomes the new senior center to seat and serve as many as 100 folks. Let's stand up and cheer for these efforts for my "little hometown."

PARTICIPANTS: St. Joseph Central Catholic High School students winning silver medals in the National Mythology Exam include Schelli Linz, Patrick Karnes, Owen Severson, Emily Assaley, Patrick Washington and Dan Piaskowski. Receiving bronze medals were Rachel Enders, Zach Dougherty, Lee Chirpas and Olivia Falvo. Latin I students participating in the National Latin Exam were Schelli Linz, who received a magna cum laude certificate; Dan Piaskowsi, Rachel Enders and Patrick Washington, who earned cum laude certificates.

HOSPITALIZED: Get-well wishes for Lenval "Blackie" Bowen, a retired Herald-Dispatch employee and great friend. He has been a patient in St. Mary's Medical Center for more than a month following major surgery. Prayers for Lenval and his wonderful wife and friend, Marian. I will never forget these fine folks -- no matter the occasion, they were always there for me. You just don't find friends any better than the Bowens.

DAY TRIP: Town and Country Garden Club sponsors a day trip Saturday, June 14, to the 31st annual Lewisburg, W.Va., Home and Garden Tour to visit six homes and view table art at the new library. The cost is $62, including bus transportation, ticket and box lunch. Call Nicki Osburn, 304-525-5852, by Friday, May 30.

NOTE: A word of thanks to Judy Maynard for her mailed note: "Thanks so much for your column each day. My husband, Allen, had a stroke two years ago and is homebound. He looks forward each day to the chuckle. Laughing is a good thing." How encouraging to know this column helps uplift someone's spirits, brings a smile or cheers a depressed heart.

NURSE MANAGER: Cabell Huntington Hospital has named Sheila Senters, RN, BSN, CNN, as nurse manager to coordinate nursing for inpatient and outpatient dialysis services at the J. Robert Pritchard Dialysis Center. Sheila joined CHH in 2001 and was named clinical coordinator for dialysis services in 2003.

AWARDED: Sarah Easter was honored recently with the Community Service Award for her internship at Jeffrey George Comfort House. The award was presented by Prudy Barker, director of volunteers at Marshall University.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAYS: Martha Snider, Johnathan Slagle of Galloway, Ohio, Rick Brown, Karla Elmore, James Hanna, Morgan Adams, Eleanor Dean, Joanne Legge, Christy York, Sally Davis, Jimmy Robinson, Kay Wildman, Becky Young and Karla Hysell. Tyler Cook celebrates two from a dime (8). Also donning the birthday hat is Bethany Sharp with The Herald-Dispatch creative services department.

TODAY'S ANNIVERSARIES: Coral and Bob Mallory of Proctorville, Ohio, married in 1955 at St. Paul Methodist Church in South Charleston, W.Va.; Jarrett and Estelle Maynard, Clinton and Jane Pever. Frosty and Sissy Hendricks of Huntington celebrate number 64.

CHUCKLE: A customer sent an order to a distributor for a large amount of goods totaling a great deal of money. The distributor noticed the previous bill hadn't been paid. The collections manager left a voicemail for them saying, "We can't ship your new order until you pay for the last one." The next day the collections manager received a collect phone call, "Please cancel the order. We can't wait that long."
