Man arrested in deadly shooting

January 10, 2012 @ 12:11 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Travis Keaton's eyes welled with tears Monday afternoon as he stood at a crime scene and faced the reality of life without his dad.

His father, Larry John Keaton Jr. of Catlettsburg, Ky., died early Monday morning after a gunshot hit the victim's torso during an altercation at a parking lot in the 1500 block of 3rd Avenue, according to a press release issued by the Huntington Police Department.

Police credited patrons at a neighboring bar with detaining a suspect, Aaron Alexander Searls. Court documents charge the 27-year-old man from Huntington with felony first-degree murder. He was jailed without bond.

A criminal complaint alleges that Searls shot the 45-year-old multiple times with a handgun. Detectives based their case upon physical evidence and interviews with both Searls and unspecified witnesses, according to the complaint.

The press release states Keaton was injured, but alive at the scene. He died a short time later at an area hospital.
