Expert sees big changes coming

HUNTINGTON -- More than 100 people packed the multipurpose room in Marshall University's Memorial Student Center to hear F. Selby Wellman talk about where online technology has come from and where it will go next.

Wellman, a 1963 graduate of Marshall University, is a retired senior vice president of Cisco Systems Inc., a company considered a worldwide leader in networking for the Internet. He delivered the keynote speech Thursday morning for Marshall's Cyberinfrastructure Day.

So much has happened since 1994 in the growth of online access and capabilities. Some in the industry saw it coming and some didn't.

"Back then, we really believed the Internet would change how we lived, worked, learned and played," said Wellman, who is on the boards of directors of Workscape, a Boston-based Human Resource software company, and Vandalia Research, a bio-tech startup company.
