With his sparkling grin, Larry Hagman masterfully created the charmingly loathsome oil baron J.R. Ewing — and coaxed forth a Texas-size gusher of ratings — on television's long-running and hugely successful nighttime soap, "Dallas." The actor, who returned as J.R. in a new edition of "Dallas" this year, died Friday.

Ewing from the television show "Dallas." The poster is part of a high-profile advertising campaign for the Russian oil giant Lukoil. "Dallas" was one of the few American TV series the late communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu allowed to be shown on Romanian television.
