James Gandolfini, whose portrayal of a brutal, emotionally delicate mob boss in HBO’s “The Sopranos” helped create one of TV’s greatest drama series and turned the mobster stereotype on its head, died Wednesday in Italy. He was 51.
This publicity film image released by The Weinstein Company shows James Gandolfini in a scene from "Killing Them Softly." In the five years since "The Sopranos" ended, Gandolfini has eschewed the spotlight, instead disappearing into character actor performances such as this one. These roles, while they may lack the iconography of Tony Soprano, have only further proved the actor's wide-ranging talent.
