While we no longer have very many photos from those early years, we do have a stash of negatives from the 1950s and early 1960s. Our dated, organized negative archives begin in April 1966.

Since December 2010, we have been scanning boxes of old negatives and posting them here at www.herald-dispatch.com/historicalphotos. We add what caption information we know, and readers have been helping to fill in the gaps.

If you can add caption information to any of the photos (or correct a caption we already have), email online editor Andrea Copley-Smith at acopley@herald-dispatch.com. Be sure to include the title of the gallery, details of the photo, your name and phone number.

Reprints of these photos are available. Find the photo you would like to purchase, then click "Purchase this photo" underneath it. Prices are $6 for a 4x6, $11 for a 5x7 and $15 for an 8x10. There are also bigger photo sizes and framing options, if you would be interested

Watkeys Food Market, previously Haydens Market, was along 8th Street across from Huntington High School. "My father, Charles Watkeys, and Mr. Hayden were initially partners until my father bought him out," said Watkeys' daughter, Judith Watkeys Fortner. "After Daddy purchased it, the street changed to parallel parking. Where eight or nine cars could park, then there was only room for four -- with three businesses there (Haydens/Watkeys, Brown's Grill and Tradewell)."

The C&P Telephone Co. at 1135 6th Ave. The man at right is Leonard Seldomridge, a Central Office Repairman (later a supervisor), according to Jim Mitchell. "The wire and blocks equipment he is working on is called a 'frame,' " he said. "This one is the Intermediate Distributing Frame (IDF). The wiring on these blocks determined if you had a private or party line. I'm retired from C&P/Bell Atlantic/Verizon, and this IDF was my first job assignment. I was called a 'Frameman.' The equipment to the left are switches that operate when a customer dials a number. This has all been replaced by digital computers."
