Damage of Lock #1 on the Big Sandy River at Catlettsburg, Ky., according to the box. Date is unknown. "This view is the upstream approach to the lock chamber," said Richard McCoy of Huntington. "The walk-way to the right crosses the miter gates, which are closed. For a vessel to pass the lock, the chamber must be filled to the upstream pool level and the miter gates swung into the recess in the lockwall shown on the left."

Damage of Lock #1 on the Big Sandy River at Catlettsburg, Ky., according to the box. Date is unknown. "The dams were 'needle dams' and depended on an upstream dam pool to remain intact," said Richard McCoy of Huntington. "Apparently, high water and ice have disturbed the balance. Some of the needles (large timbers being retrieved) have drifted into the lock approach. It looks cold out there, but those guys on the raft were tough. Once retrieved, the needles would be replaced on the dam using the derrick crane work boat, a needle flat (boat)."
