The first one on the left is Dorothy McClure (thanks to Robin Chandler Wilks). The second lady Dorothy (Mrs. Basil) Brangham (thanks to Ken Reffeitt). The middle lady is retired music teacher Janice Chandler Gold (thanks to Gold's daughter, Robin Chandler Wilks). The fourth lady is unidentified so far. The lady on the far right is Maureen Roberts, according to Anita Farrell. "She was a member of Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church," she said. "Her husband, Clyde, was a pharmacist."

Walter Lewis was born in Lithuania in 1885, according to a newspaper article published the day after his death April 13, 1970. He came to the United States as a child and lived for several years in Texas before moving to Huntington in 1908. Lewis established a chain of furniture stores in Huntington as well as in other West Virginia cities and in Ohio and Kentucky. He was well known as a Huntington financier and real estate developer.

"He was a very close friend of mine and known as 'Mr. West Virginia,' " he said. "I still have quite a few editions, as I was a contributing writer from 1961-1974. The ladies are holding an edition of his paper. He looked like this when I featured him on my 'Neighbors' TV show on WHTN-TV in 1956-1958. We remained friends, and I booked him on many speaking engagements in Virginia in the mid- to late-1960s, out of Charlottesville." Comstock died in 1996 at the age of 85.

"He was Henry Shadwell's assistant for several years, taking over the Cabell County band program after Shadwell died," he said. Shadwell, along with Charles Gorby of South Charleston and Carl McElfresh from Logan High School, started the West Virginia Band Festival in May 1936. Thanks also to Paul Fulks for the information.
