Hundreds of people welcome home the 1981 Marshall University football team, after they beat Appalachian State 17-10 on Nov. 7, 1981, at Conrad Stadium (now Kidd Brewer Stadium) in Boone, N.C. It was the school's first Southern Conference win, after joining the conference in 1977. The 1981 team had a 2-9 record under coach Sonny Randle.

Marshall University  beat Appalachian State 17-10 on Nov. 7, 1981, at Conrad Stadium (now Kidd Brewer Stadium) in Boone, N.C.

Hundreds of fans welcomed the team back to Huntington.

It was the school's first Southern Conference win, after joining the conference in 1977. The 1981 team had a 2-9 record under coach Sonny Randle.

From 1966 to 1983, Marshall's football program suffered a dismal streak of losing seasons. In 1984, Marshall won its two final games on the road against Illinois State and East Tennessee State to finish with a 6-5 record for its first winning season in 20 years.
