Golden Gloves boxing tournament registration. The man in the middle of the photo was "Speed" Layman, according to Doug Bess. "I never did know his real name. He used to visit my grandfather Bill Bess mostly in his workshop at his home on 925 8th St.," he said. "Mr. Layman, I believe, was a boxer, but I don't know that for sure. I wish I had taken more interest in those things back then. The Golden Gloves sure brings back memories for me, as both my grandmother and grandfather were heavily involved with promoting it for a number of years." "This is definitely a precinct polling place with the five election officers -- note registration book for the precinct (open) and the slips for keeping track of the number of voters, etc.," said Ken Reffeitt. "It must be a general election (not a primary) as there is only one poll slip book (white). In the primaries, the two parties' poll slips were of different colors (pink and blue)."
