Jack Lengyel, who had coached the rebuilding of the team after the Nov. 14, 1970, plane crash, resigned at the end of the 1974 season. Team captains were Allen Meadows and Jesse Smith.

It was Marshall's only win in the 1974 season. Jack Lengyel, who had coached the rebuilding of the team after the Nov. 14, 1970, plane crash, resigned at the end of the 1974 season. Team captains were Allen Meadows and Jesse Smith.

From 1966 to 1983, Marshall's football program suffered a dismal streak of losing seasons. In 1984, Marshall won its two final games on the road against Illinois State and East Tennessee State to finish with a 6-5 record for its first winning season in 20 years.
