About 1,200 people participated in the scene. The movie tells of the 1970 plane crash that killed 75 people including members of the football team and the fight to keep the football program. Atkins' character is a football player who missed the trip to East Carolina due to a foot injury.

In 2006, the Tri-State was invaded by Hollywood.

For weeks, residents were able to watch some filming take place for "We Are Marshall," as well as running into actors about and out.

Filming began April 3, 2006, in Huntington and concluded in Atlanta on June 21, 2006.

The Warner Bros. production is an inspirational drama based on the true story of Marshall's and Huntington's efforts to rebound from the tragic plane crash on Nov. 14, 1970.
