Three notes about this gallery:

The winner of "Miss Marshall" 1973 was Karen Kuhl from Huntington. (Her married name is McNeely.) Thanks to Anita Farrell for the identification.

The two children in photos 8-10 are Ann (Barrett) Tao, age 5, and Ned Barrett, age 11. They are the children of Eddie Barrett, who was athletic director at Marshall from 1967-1969, and Betty Barrett, who was on Huntington City Council in the 1980-90s.

Also, in several photos, you will see a female mascot named "Marsha." Apparently, she was around for a few years in the 1970s. Woody Woodrum of Kindred Communications believes Marsha was the idea of then-athletic director Joe McMullen.

“She was around until, at least, the late 1970s, and Joe was gone about 1979, so that's why I figured it was his idea to give Marco a female companion,” he said. “It probably had something to do, as well, with the Marco name coming from MARshall COllege. Now Marshall had been a university for about 12 years, so Marsha(ll) makes a little sense that way.”

Mike Powers, a videographer for Marshall University, said, "Marsha did not travel with the team, so she was a ‘stay-at-home mascot.’ ”

From 1966 to 1983, Marshall's football program suffered a dismal streak of losing seasons. In 1984, Marshall won its two final games on the road against Illinois State and East Tennessee State to finish with a 6-5 record for its first winning season in 20 years.
