Johnston Elementary School, built in 1915 at 3rd Street West on West 7th Avenue. Date is unknown. Johnston, along with Monroe and Jefferson elementary schools, closed at the end of the 1998 school year. Those schools consolidated into Central City Elementary. Gallaher School at Norway Avenue and Gallaher Street. Date is unknown. The school housed students until June 1991. In May 1992, it was razed. Roy L. Straight was a retired Huntington High School principal. He died Jan. 6, 1986, in St. Cloud, Fla. Straight was also a Marshall University assistant football coach from 1937 to 1949. A Mannington, W.Va., native, Straight began his teaching career in Harrison County in 1935 before coaching at Marshall. After a one year coaching sting at the University of North Carolina, he returned to Huntington and started his teaching career at Huntington East High School. From 1951 to 1953, he taught at Enslow Junior High School and returned the following school year to Huntington East High School. A year later, he became principal at West Junior High School and served there until his appointment at HHS in 1967. Straight, a World War II Navy veteran, also served as recreation director of the Huntington Park System during the summer of 1950. Photo is from 1950.
