The original Cabell County Jail was built in 1896, according to “Cabell County Courthouses,” a brief history written by Judge George S. Wallace. That was even before the main part of the Cabell County Courthouse was completed in 1901. The original jail was used from 1896 to 1940. In 1938, a contract was awarded for construction of the courthouse’s east wing and a new jail. Sometime between 1938 to 1940, the original jail was moved to the corner of 7th Street and 5th Avenue. It was enclosed in a wire fence and kept in use while the new jail was being erected. The new jail was completed March 16, 1940, and dedicated March 23, 1940. Sometime after that, the original jail was demolished (shown here). The new Cabell County Jail was used for more than 60 years, from 1940 until the Western Regional Jail was dedicated Nov. 20, 2003, in Barboursville. Inmates were moved from the courthouse jail to the new Western Regional Jail in November and December 2003. The courthouse jail is still in use as a short-term holding facility for inmates.

We have a treasure trove of old negatives and photos at The Herald-Dispatch. Some of the images, we know. Others, we have no idea.

We are scanning the negatives and photos and running some of the photos in the newspaper.

These photos were from a box of 4x5 negatives. They are most likely from the late 1940s to early 1950s.

Browse through the gallery. If you can add caption information to any of the photos (or correct a caption we already have), e-mail online editor Andrea Copley-Smith at acopley@herald-dispatch.com or call 304-526-2764. Be sure to include the title of the gallery, details of the photo, your name and phone number.
