We have a treasure trove of old negatives and photos at The Herald-Dispatch. Some of the images, we know. Others, we have no idea.

We are scanning the negatives and photos and running some of the photos in the newspaper.

These photos were from a box of 4x5 negatives. The box includes no information.

Browse through the gallery. If you can add caption information to any of the photos (or correct a caption we already have), e-mail online editor Andrea Copley-Smith at acopley@herald-dispatch.com or call 304-526-2764. Be sure to include the title of the gallery, details of the photo, your name and phone number.

Huntington firefighters battle at blaze at the Adelphi Hotel along 9th Street between 4th and 5th avenues in downtown Huntington, on Dec. 25, 1950. According to a news story, the fire first broke out about 2 p.m., and no one was hurt. The Herald-Dispatch quoted Green Triplett, the hotel’s manager, as saying most of its elderly permanent guests were out having their holiday dinner at the time. Damages were estimated at $750,000. Also damaged, in addition to the hotel, was the adjacent Carolina Building. Businesses affected included the Charles Restaurant, the White Pantry Restaurant, Nick’s News, Family Kitchen Bakery, the Health Spot Shoe Store and the Adelphi Barber Shop. Most of the ground-floor businesses were not burned, but suffered extensive water damage. The hotel, which was built in 1895, is now the site of the Cabell County Public Library. The building on the right, formerly the Cabell County Library, is now Huntington Junior College. Thanks to Jim Casto and Pvt. J. Waugh of the Huntington Fire Dept for the information.
