Martinsburg agrees to pay pollution fines

Apr. 09, 2013 @ 11:15 AM

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — Martinsburg has agreed to pay $15,830 in state fines for wastewater treatment violations.

Water and sewer department director Steve Knipe says the city will comply with a state Department of Environmental Protection consent order.

But he tells The Journal that city officials disagree with the DEP on laboratory results for fecal coli samples taken at Martinsburg's wastewater treatment plant.

The DEP cited the city for exceeding the amount of fecal coli discharges that the plant's permit allows.

The samples are divided between the city and the DEP for testing. Knipe says the city's results are different from the DEP's findings.

The city also was cited for using the wrong reporting forms. Knipe says the forms have been corrected.
