CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Schools in nine counties have received state Department of Education grants for after-school, community outreach and other programs.

The board Thursday approved a list of Dropout Prevention Innovation Zones for the 2012-13 school year.
Cabell County will use a grant for an initiative aimed at improving the county’s graduation rate.

Pocahontas County will promote learning opportunities at off-campus locations such as libraries.

Greenbrier West High School’s grant will support after-school programs with a focus on the arts.

Other grants were awarded to school systems in Lincoln, Upshur, McDowell and Nicholas counties and at Doddridge County and Wheeling Park high schools.
