Charleston gaming convention set for this month

Oct. 06, 2013 @ 10:55 AM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — For Travis Reynolds, it’s all about fun and games.

That’s why he founded CharCon almost a decade ago.

And it appears there’s no end in sight.

The popular gaming convention again will return to the Charleston Civic Center the weekend of Oct. 18.

“We want people to have fun and learn to play games and enjoy them and go home and play games with their families,” Reynolds said. “We want it to be more than just playing games at our show. We want them to start playing games all the time.”

According to Reynolds, CharCon provides an array of different gaming opportunities, including board games, miniature games, card games, role-playing games and live-action games.

Participants will be able to check out different games or bring games of their own.

The convention also will have several vendors, raffles and a costume contest.
Reynolds said that CharCon has grown every year since it was first established in 2008.

Last year just more than 650 people attended the convention, and Reynolds expects that number to climb even higher this year.

“I have no reason to think it won’t,” he added.

The hours of CharCon are Oct. 18 from noon to midnight, Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. to midnight and Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

A weekend pass is $40, and admission for either Oct. 18 or 20 is $20. It will cost $25 to enter the Civic Center Oct. 19.

Children 12 years old and younger can buy tickets for half of the adult prices. A $5 visitor’s badge will be offered for those who only want to check out the convention. The $5 will go toward the cost of general admission if a person decides they would like to buy a pass to play games, according to Reynolds.
Tickets are available at the door.

Once inside, a majority of the activities are free, Reynolds said.

“There’s plenty of gaming that is not going to cost another dime,” Reynolds added.
