Coal leads W.Va. exports in 2009
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Coal was West Virginia’s top export in 2009 despite a 4.5 decline.
The West Virginia Development Office says coal exports totaled $2.1 billion last year, down from a record $2.2 billion in 2008.
Overall, the state’s exports fell by 14.5 percent, from a record $5.6 billion in 2008 to $4.8 billion.
Plastics was the second leading export at $687 million, down from $981 million in 2008. Machinery was third at $539 million, down from $664 million in 2008.
Chemical exports also fell, from $355 million in 2008 to $317 million.
The Development Office says Canada was the state’s top trading partner.
