Mothman draws tourists of the strange

September 19, 2008 @ 03:35 PM

POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. (AP) — In 1966 and 1967, people in Point Pleasant either saw a mysterious creature later dubbed Mothman, or they let their imaginations get the better of them.

Regardless, Mothman has become a beloved resident of the Ohio River town, and the annual festival in his honor continues to grow in size and popularity.

The seventh annual Mothman Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday, featuring everything from guest speakers on the paranormal to Mothman pizzas and, of course, many people hoping to spot the creature himself.

Point Pleasant, with a museum and statue dedicated to Mothman, has seen its profile rise ever since the release of the 2002 film “The Mothman Prophecies.”

Restaurants and hotels see year-round interest in the famous creature.
