From jazz to foreign films and theater, MU has it all this semester
HUNTINGTON — A new semester is on the horizon at Marshall University, and one of the things that means is a fresh batch of events in the Marshall Artists Series.
First up during the spring semester is jazz legend Sergio Mendes as part of the annual MU Winter Jazz Festival. The show will take place at 8 p.m. Jan. 31.
Tickets range from $46 to $61.
Mendes’ latest CD, and first new album in eight years, Timeless (Concord Records/Starbucks Hear Music), is a collaboration with Black Eyed Peas producer/songwriter will.i.am that merges the Latin and African polyrhythms of Brazil’s urban music, samba and bossa nova, with American urban music. It features some of today’s biggest pop artists, including Black Eyed Peas, Erykah Badu, India.Arie, Q-Tip, Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Jill Scott, and Stevie Wonder.
Soon after Mendes will be “Sweeney Todd,” at 8 p.m. Feb. 5. Tickets are $46 and $56. The musical revolves around the infamous demon barber who takes up with his crafty neighbor, Mrs. Lovett. The two embark on a delicious plot to slice their way through London’s upper crust. The production features music and lyrics by multiple Tony Award winner Stephen Sondheim and direction/design by Tony-Award winner John Doyle.
The Spring International Film Festival is set for Feb. 20-26. This year’s selections are “Brick Lane,” “Edge of Heaven,” “Caramel,” “Elsa & Fred,” “The Grocer’s Son” and “Trouble The Water.” Tickets are $7 and $5 for Marshall staff and faculty.
“Golda’s Balcony,” is a 90-minute production based on Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir. The show is set for 8 p.m. March 7.
March 9 will bring “Blues Journey,” at 7 p.m. Journey through the history of the blues with the bluesman Willie Brown as he spins stories, both fact and fiction, chronicling his travels and the pivotal encounters along his route.
The sibling act The 5 Browns will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. April 22. The 5 Browns “fab five” siblings are classical music’s first family of piano virtuosos. The five brothers and sisters first emerged as a phenomenon in classical music when they attended New York’s prestigious Julliard School of Music all at one time, and have since performed soldout concerts in the United States and abroad with a succession of chart-topping albums. Tickets range from $36 to $46.
The season will conclude at 8 p.m. April 28, with “The 25th annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” In the Tony Award-winning new musical comedy six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser. Tickets are $46 and $56.
All shows are at the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center. Tickets are available through all Ticketmaster outlets, at the Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center on 5th Avenue, www.ticketmaster.com and by phone at 304-523-5757 or 304-696-6656.
