Man dies trying to stop runaway vehicle
HUNTINGTON — A rolling vehicle and one man’s split-second decision ended his life Thursday afternoon atop Summit Drive in Huntington’s Southeast Hills neighborhood.
The incident happened shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday at the victim’s residence near the intersection of Summit Drive and Ridgewood Drive. His wife had just arrived home and exited their minivan when it began to roll down their steep driveway toward Summit Drive, said Huntington Police Cpl. Gary Queen.
The man, who had been home waiting for his wife to arrive, immediately tried to stop the vehicle. His efforts ended with his body getting stuck under the minivan. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Queen said.
“It was one of those things that can happen, but rarely ever,” he said. “Of course you can’t put yourself into everybody’s situation and guess what should or would happen, but the best thing I would have done here is to have let the vehicle go.”
But Queen acknowledged the steep topography and the close proximity to other homes in Friday’s incident increased the chance somebody else might have been hurt.
The victim’s name was not immediately released. The incident remains under investigation.
