W.Va. jail inmate dead, fellow inmate charged
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia State Police say a North Central Regional Jail inmate has died of severe head injuries, and a federal prisoner housed at the same facility has been charged with his murder.
Sgt. Michael Baylous says 19-year-old Jeron Hawkins of Dunbar underwent organ donation surgery Wednesday after succumbing to his injuries.
Hawkins was convicted of first-degree murder last fall in a 2011 shooting outside a nightclub in Morgantown.
Baylous said Thursday that troopers charged 35-year-old inmate Anthony Young of Roosevelt, N.Y., with Hawkins’ death and turned the case over to the Doddridge County prosecutor’s office.
Young is a federal prisoner who was in the jail under contract with the U.S. Marshals Service. He was awaiting sentencing for his role in a 2006 slaying at the U.S. Penitentiary at Hazelton.
