Wheeling Island, breeders spar over dog races
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — State regulators want Wheeling Island Hotel, Casino and Racetrack and greyhound breeders to settle a dispute over how many races are held at the track.
The Charleston Daily Mail reports that the West Virginia Racing Commission ruled at a special meeting Tuesday that Wheeling Island must hold 109 races a week. The decision reversed a January ruling requiring 115 races.
But the commission also told the racetrack and the West Virginia Kennel Owners Association to work out a compromise by the commission’s meeting in March.
The association’s attorney, Phil Reale, criticized the racetrack for not complying with the January ruling.
Wheeling Island president and general manager Jim Simms said the racetrack needs to reduce the number of races to remain solvent.
