Man pleads guilty in '11 killing

HUNTINGTON -- Anthony Patrick Cole received a 50-year prison sentence in connection with the Jan. 26, 2011, shooting death of New York native Dashawn Gilbert and a robbery from weeks earlier.
Cole pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He also pleaded guilty to fraudlent use of an access device in conneciton with the earlier armed robbery.
Both were reductions from initial charges of first-degree murder and first-degree robbery. Each of the initial charges carried possible life prison sentences.
The prosecution extendned the plea offer so as to avoid any possible appeal, said Cabell County Prosecutor Chiles. Cole must serve 15 years before he is eligible for parole.
Gilbert's mother repeatedly asked for a reason why Cole killed her son. It was a question for which Cole had no explanation telling the court he couldn't explain himself.
Prior testimony indicated that Cole contemplated suicide moments before he pointed the same gun at Gilbert's head, telling the victim "may God have mercy on your soul."
