The Dreamsicles at the Clay Center for Woody Hawley Series
CHARLESTON — Poetic voices, intricate harmonies and soulful lyrics make for an incredible evening when The Dreamsicles perform in the Clay Center's Walker Theater on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. This performance is part of the Woody Hawley Concert Series. The opening performer will be Paul Callicoat.
The Dreamsicles features Tom Prasada-Rao and Cary Cooper, two singer-songwriters who fell in love in 2002. They began writing songs together almost immediately - songs that describe the rollercoaster ride of finding love again later in life. They set out to create something different, not for 13-year-olds with allowance money, but for parents with mortgages and divorces. Soon their songs developed a certain motif, celebrating the experience, fear and longing of those who have actually been around the block.
Both Prasada-Rao and Cooper are Kerrville New Folk Competition winners and accomplished songwriters in their own right. To create their music, they draw on their experience in classical violin, musical theater, raising kids and living in the third world. The Washington Post calls their songs "cleverly-worded pop confections that swiftly live up to the pair's billing."
The Woody Hawley Concert Series brings celebrated singers and songwriters from all over the country to perform in the Clay Center's Walker Theater, which is transformed into an intimate-cabaret-style venue for these performances. Each show opens with a talented local musician.
Artistic Director Ron Sowell brought the series to the Clay Center in 2005 after it outgrew its original home at the Unity Church of Kanawha Valley. Pastor Woody Hawley, before his death, inspired Sowell to start a concert series to feature renowned musicians as a service to the local community.
This performance is sponsored by the West Virginia Healthcare Association. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and students. Call 304-561-3570 or visit www.theclaycenter.org for more information.
