St. Mary's celebrates 85 years with Center for Education dedication

November 05, 2009 @ 10:59 AM

HUNTINGTON — St. Mary’s Medical Center is celebrating 85 years of health care in the Tri-State with the dedication of its new Center for Education, located at 29th Street and Fifth Avenue in Huntington.

St. Mary’s will hold a dedication ceremony for its Center for Education at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at the center. The event will include a blessing by Most Reverend Michael J. Bransfield, Bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston. Tours of the $10 million, nearly 60,000-square-foot facility will be available to the public between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The Center for Education dedication takes place on the same date the Pallottine Missionary Sisters opened St. Mary’s Hospital 85 years ago. Two years after its opening, the hospital’s number of patients continued to grow, and the Sisters realized the nursing staff had to be increased. St. Mary’s School of Nursing opened in 1926 and is now part of the Center for Education, which also houses the St. Mary’s School of Medical Imaging and the St. Mary's School of Respiratory Care.
