State-run hospital named for ex-W.Va. lawmaker

BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) — A state-run hospital in Beckley has been renamed in honor of a former Raleigh County lawmaker.

Pinecrest Hospital was christened as Jackie Withrow Hospital at a ceremony Wednesday.

The 91-year-old Withrow served in the House of Delegates from 1961 to 1978.

Raleigh County Delegate Bill Wooton says Withrow pushed for reforms in all public institutions and was a voice for the state’s most fragile citizens.

Wooton says her accomplishments included work on getting compensation for coal miners suffering from black lung and a law mandating mental health retardation tests for all children.
