W.Va. chamber wants boycott of health care overall

November 21, 2009 @ 08:00 AM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia’s Chamber of Commerce wants the state’s congressional delegation to withhold its vote on federal health care overhauls until questions surrounding the mining of coal are resolved.

Chamber President Steve Roberts says the Obama administration and Congress are waging a war on coal and that war threatens West Virginia’s economic welfare.

Coal has been the target of several federal actions ranging from increased scrutiny over permitting to proposals on curbing global warming.

Roberts says it’s counterintuitive to pursue health care when the campaign against coal will result in the loss of jobs and health benefits for those currently working in the industry.

West Virginia is the second largest coal producing state in the nation.
