State auditors to review Fayette Co. schools

November 23, 2009 @ 10:10 AM

FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. (AP) — State auditors are returning to the Fayette County school system to see if problems identified in previous reviews have been corrected.

Office of Educational Performance Audits executive director Kenna Seal says an audit team will conduct another review soon.

A 2006 audit found irregularities in hiring and financial practices, low student achievement and poor leadership. The findings prompted the state Board of Education to declare a state of emergency for the school system in 2007.

An audit conducted earlier this year found that many issues have been addressed. Based on that review, the board gave the school system conditional accreditation in February and told it to correct the remaining problems.
