Group questions timbering in W.Va. state forest
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — A group that promotes recreation and wildlife protection in Coopers Rock State Forest is questioning the state’s plan to timber in a section of the park.
Members of the Coopers Rock Foundation say they’re concerned about the forest’s trails and the flat-spired three-toothed snail, which is only found in the Cheat River Gorge.
The state Division of Forestry says the project is designed to improve wildlife habitat and the oak tree population in an area near Scotts Run.
State Lands Manager Barbara Breshock says the goal is to improve conditions for the oaks to regenerate by reducing some of the shade on the forest floor. Forestry officials also want to develop a savannah to attract wildlife.
