Monongalia County wants to join overseas voter pilot

November 30, 2009 @ 08:31 AM

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A pilot overseas voter program approved during the Legislature's recent special session is already drawing interest from at least one county.

Monongalia County Clerk Carye Blaney says the county plans to apply to participate in the Uniformed Services and Overseas Voter Pilot Program.

Secretary of State Natalie Tennant says the program allows members of the military and other residents living overseas to vote online.

Tennant says only 4,200 overseas absentee ballots were cast during the 2008 general election. More than 42,000 West Virginians living overseas are eligible to vote by absentee ballot.

Counties have until Jan. 8 to apply to participate in the program.
