Activist goes hungry over W.Va. mining
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — An environmental activist says he’s going without food because of mountaintop removal mining — and he’s not sure when the fast will end.
Roland Micklem was at the state Capitol on Monday. The 81-year-old says he’s only drinking liquids and taking vitamin pills and medication.
Micklem says he’s not fasting for a specific goal, but rather because he’s mourning the effects of surface mining.
Micklem is working with the group Climate Ground Zero.
Next week, that group and others plan to lobby the state Department of Environmental Protection to demand an end to a mine operation’s blasting on Coal River Mountain.
Micklem says he won’t be at the Capitol every day of his fast.
