Woman returns escaped husband to Ky. prison
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — A woman has been charged with helping her husband escape a federal prison in eastern Kentucky, but authorities said she brought him back after he became sick and later died.
Randolph Copely, an FBI agent, said in sworn statement that Susan Witherspoon brought her 48-year-old husband, Desmond Greene, back to the minimum security prison in Martin County last Sunday.
Copely said because the prison isn’t fenced, sometimes inmates leave “to rendezvous with spouses and paramours for romantic interludes,” then sneak back in before the next head count.
But Witherspoon returned to the prison that night, crying and calling for help. Greene was found unresponsive in her car in the parking lot.
Copley said ambulance workers rushed him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
