Waterfront ash trees protected from beetle

July 03, 2009 @ 12:32 PM

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The city of Louisville is taking steps to protect its investment in ash trees on the Ohio River waterfront.

Hundreds of the tree roots around Waterfront Park are being injected with a chemical intended to protect trees from the tree-killing emerald ash borer.

Presence of the borer has not been confirmed in the park, but they have been found in neighboring Shelby and nearby Jessamine counties.

Horticulture technician Beth Reece of the Jefferson County Extension Office tells The (Louisville) Courier-Journal that the beetles are in areas surrounding the Louisville metro, and they are coming.

The roots of more than 200 trees at Waterfront Park are being treated with a pesticide to kill the borer.
