W.Va. tightens rules on equine health
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The state Department of Agriculture has tightened health requirements for horses, donkeys and other equine being shown or sold in West Virginia.
Rules that took effect Wednesday call for a negative test for Equine Infectious Anemia within the past 12 months. The previous rule allowed for tests up to two years old.
West Virginia’s rules are now consistent with USDA standards.
However, fairs, festivals and equine shows are being granted a 90-day grace period before enforcement becomes mandatory.
Animals that are infected with the incurable viral disease must be euthanized or placed on lifelong quarantine.
