July 05, 2009 @ 10:55 AM

BARBOURSVILLE — Score it ... Rain 1, Youth Soccer, 0.
A soggy start to Sunday has delayed morning games at Barboursville Soccer Park to 10 a.m. start, due to the weather.

Games at the YMCA’s Glenbrier Center, located just north of Huntington along West Virginia 2 began at the regular time, 8 a.m.

Today is the last day of preliminary games for the US Youth Soccer Region I Championships, which are in Huntington and Barboursville through Tuesday.

Playing in the six-day tournament are about 272 soccer teams representing 15 state associations from 13 states.  Among the states represented are Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Maine, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Shannon Holtz, spokesperson for US Youth Soccer, said this morning the tournament is continuing in the rain, but some games have been shifted.

“We have moved fields, delayed games and have cancelled games is some age groups that were not needed to determine the teams advancing to the semifinals tomorrow,” Holtz said this morning by e-mail.
