Sinkhole closes 8th Street at 5th Avenue

Apr. 09, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- A sinkhole has forced the closure of 8th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues.

Mayor Steve Williams issued a statement late Monday night about the closing of the road near the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers building. Williams said he was not certain how long the road would be closed.

The sinkhole, measuring three feet by three feet and approximately four-feet deep, will be examined by city workers on Thursday, Williams offered, and plans made to repair it and re-open the road to motorists.

A prior sinkhole in the same area prompted the closing of 8th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues in January 2012.
