Investigation continues into Lowry death

July 30, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- The Huntington Police Department has interviewed upward of 20 people, but they still lack information needed to solve this week's shooting death of Mark Lowry.

The 48-year-old man's widow says three young men approached her Ford Expedition, two brandished firearms and gunshots followed. It all took place about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at a parking lot at the 1600 block of 11th Avenue. The couple was looking for a way to reverse a wrong turn taken on the way to drop off the widow's 19-year-old son at a friend's.

Huntington Police Lt. John Williams said detectives have found little physical evidence or information to pinpoint a suspect. They have interviewed the widow, Terri Lowry.

"That's the only thing we've got to go on," he said. "Other than that you've got a dark lot and not many other witnesses."

"It just takes that piece of information that starts the domino effect and eventually you resolve the case," he said. "We have very little to work on, so it's slow getting started, but I think we will be where we need to be here in the near future."

Williams encourages anyone with information about the fatal shooting to call detectives at 304-696-4420.

A state medical examiner's autopsy confirmed Wednesday that Mark Lowry died from a single gunshot wound to the upper torso, Williams said. Terri Lowry has said the fatal shot struck her husband's heart.

A neighbor, who was sitting on her porch across the street, has said she heard loud talking without arguing. Three gunshots followed and a woman yelled as two assailants fled the area.

Williams said he believes his detectives collected similar comments during a canvass of the neighborhood. They also have taken the Lowrys' Expedition. Williams did not provide much detail, but said that vehicle has evidence consistent with that of a shooting, such as bullet holes.

Williams said investigators do not believe other vehicles left at the parking lot were involved. Witness interviews to this point indicate one of the assailants fled the scene in a unidentified vehicle.
