W.Va. gets 1 year for punch that led to death

Nov. 09, 2012 @ 01:42 PM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A 44-year-old Charleston man has been ordered to serve one year in jail for a punch that led to another man's death.

The Charleston Gazette reports Kenneth Ray Slater Jr. was sentenced Friday in Kanawha County Circuit Court after pleading guilty to battery charges.

Slater said he punched 51-year-old Robert Adkins because Adkins was "grabbing" Slater's girlfriend. Adkins was felled by the punch and hit his head on a sidewalk. He was found unconscious three days later in his home and later died.

Prosecutors sought probation, but Circuit Judge Tod Kaufman sentenced him to the jail term.

The St. Patrick's Day punch was delivered outside a South Charleston bar.
