Celebration to mark 19th amendment anniversary

Aug. 09, 2010 @ 10:55 PM

HUNTINGTON -- This year marks the 90th anniversary since the 19th amendment giving women the right to vote was ratified by the U.S. Congress.

A celebration will be held to commemorate the anniversary beginning at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, at Pullman Square.

The Sweet Adelines will open the event with a performance and will be followed by remarks from Kat Williams, president of the West Virginia Women's Commission. The Sweet Adelines will wear yellow sashes during the celebration. It was common at U.S. Suffrage Marches for women to wear political sashes with slogans such as Votes for Women.

Afterward, groups and individuals will parade to the Cabell County Courthouse. Those who wish to participate in the event can call parade organizers at 304-696-3112, 304-710-5589 or 304-736-3287.
