December 04, 2009 @ 08:15 AM

BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) — Two Bradley men accused of attacking a 73-year-old relative are in the hospital after they were beaten by other inmates at the Southern Regional Jail.

State Police say 47-year-old Michael Burnette and his 21-year-old son, Christopher, were beaten in separate sections of the jail Thursday.

The Burnettes were being held on $1 million bond each following their arrest Wednesday.
They were taken to Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital. An operator said the hospital doesn’t release patients’ conditions.

The men are accused of slashing the throat of Michael Burnette’s mother and threatening to throw her off the New River Gorge Bridge. She escaped and is recovering at a local hospital.

State Police and the state regional jail authority are investigating the jail beatings.
