Aerial photo of U.S. 35 in Mason County. According to the West Virginia Highway Markers Database, the house on the left with the white columns was the home of Gen. John McCausland, 1836-1927, one of the last officers of the general staff of the Confederate Army. He served in Pennsylvania, the Virginias and Maryland. He led Lomax's cavalry against Sheridan in Valley Campaign. The house is along U.S. 35, 17.1 miles south of W.Va. 2 and 0.4 miles west of the Putnam County border. Unknown date. Thanks to Tim Mangus for the information.

We have a treasure trove of old negatives and photos at The Herald-Dispatch. Some of the images, we know. Others, we have no idea.

We are scanning the negatives and photos and running some of the photos in the newspaper.

These photos were from a box of 4x5 negatives. The box identifies most of the photos, but does not give a date of when they were shot.

Browse through the gallery. If you can add caption information to any of the photos (or correct a caption we already have), e-mail online editor Andrea Copley-Smith at acopley@herald-dispatch.com or call 304-526-2764. Be sure to include the title of the gallery, details of the photo, your name and phone number.
